What is a Market Heatmap?

A heatmap is a visual representation of an entire market on a single screen. Each stock is represented by a rectangle, sized by market capitalization and colored by a performance metric. At a glance, you can see:

• Which sectors are strong (green/cyan) or weak (red)
• Which individual stocks are leading or lagging
• How market leadership is rotating between sectors
• The overall market breadth (lots of green = broad strength)

Our heatmaps use a squarified treemap algorithm with two unique features:

Color: Daily Price Change

Each stock's color intensity reflects its daily percentage change:

• Bright teal (+5% or more): Strong momentum day
• Teal (+3% to +5%): Solid gains
• Dark green (+1% to +3%): Modest positive
• Muted green (+0.5% to +1%): Slight positive
• Gray (±0.5%): Flat / neutral
• Dark red (−0.5% to −1%): Slight weakness
• Red (−1% to −3%): Declining
• Deep red (−3% to −5%): Significant weakness
• Bright red (below −5%): Sharp sell-off

RS Rating and Minervini Score are shown in hover tooltips for deeper analysis.

Size: Market Capitalization

Larger rectangles = larger companies. This gives you an instant sense of whether large-caps or small-caps are leading the market.

Grouping: GICS Sectors

Stocks are grouped by sector (Technology, Healthcare, Financials, etc.), so you can instantly see sector-level patterns.

Reading Sector Rotation

Sector rotation is the movement of capital from one sector to another as economic conditions change. Heatmaps make this visible:

Pattern 1: Sector Warming

When a previously gray/red sector starts showing green/teal stocks, money is flowing in. This is early-stage rotation — the sector is gaining daily momentum. Check the hover tooltips for improving RS Ratings.

What to do: Add stocks from this sector to your watchlist. Look for individual stocks with RS improving from 50s to 70s+ (visible in tooltips).

Pattern 2: Sector Cooling

When a previously green/teal sector starts fading to gray or red, money is flowing out. The sector has been a leader but is losing momentum.

What to do: Tighten stops on existing positions in this sector. Don't add new positions.

Pattern 3: Broad Green

When most sectors show green/teal, the overall market is having a strong day. Market breadth is strong. This is the best environment for momentum strategies.

What to do: Be aggressive with entries. Multiple sectors showing strength means broad participation.

Pattern 4: Broad Red

When most sectors show red, the market is selling off. Few stocks are working regardless of quality.

What to do: Reduce exposure. Even the best setups have lower probability in a broad sell-off. Wait for breadth to improve.

Practical Heatmap Analysis Workflow

1. Daily check (30 seconds): Open the heatmap for your market. Is it mostly green, mostly red, or mixed?
2. Sector scan (1 minute): Which sectors have the most green/teal? Which are fading?
3. Leader identification (2 minutes): Hover over the brightest green stocks to check RS Rating and Minervini Score in the tooltip. Click to open the chart. These are potential watchlist candidates.
4. Cross-reference (2 minutes): Check if these stocks also appear in the Minervini Candidates or VCP Patterns reports.

How often are heatmaps updated?

Daily, after market close for each market. JPX-400 updates after Tokyo close, S&P 500 after NYSE close, etc.

Can I click on individual stocks in the heatmap?

Yes. Each stock rectangle links to a chart for detailed analysis — Taiwan links to Yahoo Taiwan technical analysis, Hong Kong and other markets link to TradingView.

Why use daily price change for color instead of RS Rating?

Daily price change gives an immediate visual snapshot of today's market action — which sectors are moving and in which direction. RS Rating and Minervini Score are available in hover tooltips for deeper analysis, combining the best of both: instant daily context at a glance, with momentum data one hover away.
